Loneliness: A Complex Construct
Unlike DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder), NANDA (North American Nursing Diagnosis Association) is the only diagnostic manual that counts loneliness as a separate mental disorder, in relation to depression. Much of today’s scientific research, in fact, demonstrates that loneliness is not simply a symptom of depression, as a significant number of subjects with high levels of loneliness syndrome do not have a depressive condition. is is opening up a new perspective, in the sense of treating loneliness as a distinct construct and diagnostic entity.
