Loneness and Aging Among People with Rheumatic Diseases

The experience of loneliness is universal, but it is also a conceptual challenge that derives, in part, from the different perspectives of the research on that issue which correlates loneliness with satisfaction, social support and the health condition, especially the chronic diseases. In this context, rheumatic diseases have important psychological consequences which require a proper adaptation and an adjustment of the patient in multiple dimensions of life. The research developed for this article is directed to the experience of loneliness among elderly people with rheumatic diseases. The sample is constituted by 92 elderly and the research demonstrates that the rheumatic patients present a higher prevalence of loneliness, in comparison with the general elderly population, considering the combination of environment, psychic and physical factors, and the inherent incapacities and limitations of the disease. The research demonstrates, also, that the individuals who present the higher value for loneliness are those with a osteoporosis diagnostic, while the individuals with rheumatoid arthritis present a lesser feeling of loneliness, since they acknowledge being capable of establishing affinities in a satisfying way, and because they feel accepted by the reference figures, what drastically lowers the loneliness values. The conclusion is the indispensable role of social support for the reduction of loneliness, allowing the individual to feel integrated and useful in the family, as well as in the social environment in general.
