Author guidelines

Interações: Sociedade e as novas modernidades publishes original research articles and theoretical essays in the Social Sciences and Humanities.
Occasionally, the journal may include critical book reviews, provided they are relevant to its scientific and editorial scope and subject to the decision of the journal’s Director and Editor-in-Chief.

General requirements

Submitted manuscripts must:

  • be original and unpublished;
  • not be under simultaneous consideration by another journal or scientific publication;
  • fall within the scientific and editorial scope of the journal;
  • comply with the ethical standards of scientific research and with the journal’s editorial policies, in particular the policies on publication ethics and on originality and plagiarism.

Submission of a manuscript implies full acceptance of these conditions. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in the manuscript being returned before the review process begins.

Types and length of texts

  • Research articles and theoretical essays: up to 10,000 words, including all elements of the manuscript, namely title, abstracts, keywords, main text, notes, tables and figures (including their text and captions), statements, references, appendices and annexes.
  • Critical book reviews: up to 2,000 words, including the full bibliographic reference of the work reviewed. Book reviews do not include an abstract or keywords and should preferably address works published in the last three years.

Language of publication

The journal accepts manuscripts written in Portuguese (European and Brazilian variants), Spanish or English.

Texts must be clearly written, linguistically correct and terminologically rigorous. Authors are responsible for ensuring the quality of the writing.

Manuscript structure

Research articles and theoretical essays must include, in the following order and where applicable:

  • title;
  • abstract and keywords;
  • main text;
  • statements;
  • references;
  • appendices.

Title, abstract and keywords

Research articles and theoretical essays must include:

  • a clear and informative title;
  • an abstract summarising the aims, methodology and main findings or arguments of the work;
  • three to five keywords appropriate to the content of the manuscript.

When the manuscript is not written in English, the title, abstract and keywords must also be provided in English. Each abstract, in the original language and in English, must not exceed 200 words.

File format and text formatting

Manuscripts must be submitted in an editable format (.docx or .odt), in Times New Roman, 12 point, double-spaced, with numbered pages. Footnotes should be kept to a minimum, placed at the foot of the page, and may not replace references. All web addresses cited must be active.

Citation and reference style

The journal follows the style of the American Psychological Association (APA), 7th edition, particularly regarding in-text citations, the reference list, tables and figures.

The DOI must be given for each reference whenever available, in the form https://doi.org/xxxxx.

Manuscripts that do not follow APA style may be returned to the authors before the review process begins.

Tables and figures

  • Tables and figures are numbered consecutively, with a title and source, and placed at the appropriate point in the text.
  • Figures must have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and may be requested as separate files.
  • When reproducing third-party material, authors are responsible for obtaining any necessary permissions, where applicable, and for complying with the terms of that material’s licence.

Anonymity

Peer review is conducted on a double-anonymous basis. To ensure this:

  • the manuscript must not contain names, affiliations, contact details, ORCID identifiers or acknowledgements that could identify the authors; these details are entered only in the submission metadata;
  • self-citations must be written in the third person; only where this is not enough to conceal authorship should they be replaced by “Author, year”, in the text and in the reference list;
  • the file properties must be cleared of any authorship information;
  • information on funding, conflicts of interest and ethics approval is disclosed in full to the editorial team at submission;
  • in the version of the manuscript sent to reviewers, only elements that could identify the authors (for example, the name of a funded project or of an institutional ethics committee) are concealed.

Mandatory statements

Before the references, manuscripts must include a section headed “Statements” containing the following elements, where applicable:

  • Conflicts of interest: a statement on the existence or absence of conflicts of interest, in accordance with the conflicts of interest policy.
  • Funding: identification of funding bodies and project reference numbers.
  • Ethics approval and informed consent: for studies involving human participants, reference to approval by an ethics committee and to informed consent, in accordance with the policy on research involving human participants.
  • Author contributions: for works with more than one author, a description of each author’s contribution, in accordance with the authorship policy.
  • Use of artificial intelligence: a statement that no artificial intelligence tools were used or, otherwise, a description of their use, in accordance with the following section.

Use of artificial intelligence

In line with the authorship policy, any use of artificial intelligence tools in the conception, research or writing of the work, including language editing, must be declared, stating the tool, its purpose and how it was used. Such tools may not be listed as authors of a manuscript. Authors remain fully responsible for the content, the accuracy of the references and the originality of the text.

Copyright, licence and fees

Authors retain copyright of their work. Articles are published open access under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International licence (CC BY-NC 4.0).

The journal follows the diamond open access model: no submission, review or publication fees are charged.

Review and editorial decision

Manuscripts undergo an initial editorial screening and double-anonymous peer review, as described on the Editorial process page. The final decision on publication rests with the journal’s Director and Editor-in-Chief.
