Hoje Não Posso, é o Dia que o Meu Pai Escolheu para Morrer: A Morte Voluntária Assistida na Cultura Ocidental do Século XXI

Resumo

Em relação à morte e ao morrer, pode ser que algumas sociedades de cultura ocidental tenham já iniciado uma viragem cultural decisiva: não esperar simplesmente que essa morte e morrer venham ter com as pessoas, mas antecipar esses tempos últimos, de modo a evitar sofrimentos temidos. Neste contexto, o artigo apresenta o modo como quatro países – Holanda, Suíça, Colômbia e Bélgica – e o estado do Oregon nos Estados Unidos, legislaram sobre a morte assistida, apresentando igualmente alguns resultados derivados dessa legislação. Na parte final do artigo, é feita referência a directivas antecipadas e à chamada eutanásia passiva e eutanásia indirecta.

Not Today, That’s the Time My Father Has Chosen to Die: Assisted Voluntary Death in the Western Culture of the 21st Century

It may happen that, in what concerns death and dying, some societies in the western culture have already initiated a decisive cultural turning point. They do not wait for illness to overwhelm people. Instead, they anticipate these last and ultimate times in order to prevent needless suffering. This article presents the way four countries – the Netherlands, Switzerland, Colombia and Belgium – and the state of Oregon in the United States have legislated on assisted death. Next some of the results of this legislative action are discussed. The final part of the article makes reference to advanced directives and the so called passive and indirect euthanasia.
