D. Sebastião e as Máscaras

Resumo

O desaparecimento do rei D.Sebastião, o Desejado, e seus supostos reaparecimentos e regressos inspirou um importante movimento, na história da imaginação portuguesa. Este artigo retrata o problema, do ponto de vista da relação entre a história e o teatro e como a metáfora da máscara dá acesso a uma representação, na cultura portuguesa, da própria teatralidade da história. O texto é profusamente ilustrado por referências do drama e da poesia, sobre o tema sebastianista, e a natureza dramatúrgica das sobreposições entre a duplicidade e o destino, a fabricação e a verdade, o mistério pessoal de um rei e a mística colectiva de uma comunidade.

D. Sebastião and the Masks

The disappearance of king D.Sebastião, the Desired, and his supposed reappearances and returns inspired an important movement in the history of the Portuguese imagination. This article reports the issue, from the point of view of the relationship between history and theatre and how the mask metaphor gives way to the representation of the theatricality of history in Portuguese culture. The text is profusely illustrated with references of drama and poetry, on the Sebastian theme, and the dramaturgical juxtapositions between duplicity and destiny, fabrication and truth, the personal mystery of a king and the collective mystic of a community.
