The Madness that Comes from the Other Only

Madness constitutes a typical reference of alterity and radical difference, in the sense that the mad appears as the image of the absolute other, because madness is always the other’s madness. This article approaches the reality that models of thought and practices of representation on madness are still being reproduced by the mental health professionals themselves, demonstrating that new directions of intervention, in the condition of severe mental disease, also imply a transformation, in the ambit of the symbolic practices of therapeutic interaction.

Keywords: Madness; serious mental illness; attitudes; intervention; mental health professionals.
