A Investigação no Serviço Social: Os Anátemas de uma Velha Questão

A transformação do pensamento, no serviço social, é particularmente marcado, hoje, pela procura de uma identidade epistemológica própria, fundada na investigação e na prática de pesquisa que, segundo certas perspectivas, parecem ser uma inovação. O argumento deste artigo é dirigido contra este último equívoco, demonstrando que a procura de uma dimensão epistemológica e de uma prática crítica distintivas constitui, na verdade, um princípio que conduziu a história do serviço social, desde o seu início. Este desenvolvimento foi, no entanto, dificultado por oscilações na definição da relação entre teoria e prática, por relação à eficácia e a natureza do trabalho no serviço social. O momento actual é, neste sentido, de maturidade nestas questões tradicionais, conforme o serviço social tende a se afirmar, na opinião da autora, como uma ‘prática teórica’ ou uma identidade crítica e epistemológica, fundamentada numa conjunção própria entre intervenção e pensamento social. O sucesso desta relação depende, porém, da convicção que o serviço social não é uma mero recipiente de ideias e modelos críticos importados do pensamento sociológico e das ciências sociais.

Research in Social Service: The Anathemas of an Old Issue

Today, the transformation of thought, in social service, is particularly marked by the search for an epistemological identity of its own, founded on research and research practice that, according to certain perspectives, seems to be an innovation. The argument of this article is directed against this last equivocation, showing that the search for a distinct epistemological dimension and critical practice constitutes, in fact, a principle that conducted social work history, since its very beginning. This development was, however, made difficult by oscillations in the definition of the relation between theory and practice, concerning the efficacy and the nature of social work. In that sense, the present moment represents, in fact, the maturity of traditional issues, as social service tends to affirm itself, in the author’s opinion, as a ‘theoretical practice’, or a critical and epistemological identity settled on a proper conjunction between intervention and social thought. The success of this relationship depends, nevertheless, on the conviction that social work is not a mere recipient of ideas and critical models imported from sociological thought and the social sciences.
